Eligibility Criteria

JEE Main

Candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects. No age limit is specified.

JEE Advanced

Top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers are eligible for JEE Advanced. Candidates should have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Percentile System, Safe Scores, and Cutoffs

Percentile System

The JEE Main percentile system is a normalization procedure used to compare scores across multiple sessions. A candidate’s percentile is calculated based on the relative performance of all candidates appearing in a particular session.

The formula for calculating the percentile is: Percentile Score = (100 × Number of candidates in the session with raw score ≤ the candidate) / Total number of candidates in the session.

Safe Scores

A safe score in JEE Main is generally considered to be 98-99 percentile or above. For JEE Advanced, a safe score would be around 200+ marks, depending on the difficulty level of the paper.

The cutoffs for NITs and IITs vary every year and are determined based on factors such as the number of applicants, seat availability, and difficulty level of the exam. Generally, a rank within 10,000 in JEE Main ensures a seat in NITs, while a rank within 2,500 in JEE Advanced is needed for a seat in the IITs.
